Sometimes it needs contrasts to creat masters. Jukka and Sirpa were born in the Northern Finland far away from the heath of Latin rhythms, but even in the country of freezing winters you can have the lust for hot rhythms of the south.
Both oh them started dancing already at the age of 5. Sirpa at the bar in ballet school and Jukka with Folkloric dancing, in one of the many active dancing groups of the district. But soon at the age of 10 the mating call of Latin way reached them and they took their first steps on the dance floor.
Jukka started in his hometown Lapua and Sirpa in Oulu, not far form each other.
Jukka won Finnish Championships in Latin and 10 Dance in Junior and Youth ( Miss Hanna Kappola as his partner) and as Amateur categories (with Miss Heli Lahdensuo). His best Amateur result internationally was reaching The British Open Youth under 21 Championships Final in 1985 with Heli. Later Jukka danced for one year with Miss Sophie Jorgenssen of Denmark and reached top 15 in the World in Amateur category
Sirpa was multiple Latin and 10 Dance Champion of Finland in her amateur days with Mr Timo Pukkila. She also won junior titles dancing with her cousin, Pekka Suutari-Jaasko.
Sirpa skipped youth as she partnered Mr Tony Wong enjoying sudden success and going straight from being a junior champion to become a finalist in amateur Latin.
Timo and Sirpa were featured in the final of the 10 Dance World Cup.
Both Jukka and Sirpa were representing Finland in various international championships throughout their amateur careers.
Jukka and Sirpa met each other early on the dance floors competing against each other being the same age. Having finished their respective amateur careers in 1989, they teamed up and turned professional.
First competition together was The British Open Professional Rising Star Latin in Blackpool 1990. They reached top 24.
British open 1991 British Open Rising Star Pro Latin 3rd.
British Open Professional Latin Grand Final 1992, 4th.
"In the field of Latin American Dancing we feel that the most significant achievement for us is this rise in to the Grand Final in a very short time, only two years after we started together. From there on we never looked back and went on to become the first Finns to win an Open to the world title at the British. Our victories in 1997. 1998 ,1999 and 2001 remain our most important successes. More important than the actual titles is the fact that we were able to break the stronghold of the traditionally prominent nations in our field and prove to all dancers that it is possible to become a champion without the support of a strong political nation and by only believing in your beloved form of dance and in yourself."
After retiring from competitions in 2002 Jukka and Sirpa have enjoyed success as touring Latin cabaret artists.
" We have always loved music, but above all else, Latin music and rhythms. During our competing years we already traveled to Cuba to study the origins of Afro-Cuban culture and were strongly touched by the spirit of Latin America. Since we stopped competing we have continued our studies and found new influence from musicians in Santiago and Havana. Now that the relative restriction of the competition scene is not so prominent in our professional lives anymore, we are able to broaden the concept and introduce new ideas to the show.
Most recently we have teamed up together with the Stars of the World famous Tango Argentina show Tango Passion, Monica and Omar Ocampo, Los Ocampo.
We are in the process of preparing our show together and this show has already been previewed in Finland. We look forward to going on tour together. The show is a fusion of Tango and other Latin Dances and in the future we will be also hoping to perform with live music on stage.
Our aim as dancers will be to bring joy and emotion to our audiences. The best reward is to be able to share our Passion and Love for Dancing.
